Hårtwood sits on a back road outside Minden, about two and a half hours north of Toronto, beside a protected nature reserve. Lauren and Cam Green built it under their company, Fort Treehouse Co.; the Toronto studio KSA designed the three houses. There is no grid connection. The houses run on solar power, with propane stoves and heated floors for the cold months.
Writing for Wallpaper* in March 2026, Sofia de la Cruz described how each structure is "anchored to a pair of carefully selected host trees that will continue to grow, sway, and respond to the elements." A building that moves slightly with its trees is not a detail you forget at three in the morning, in a good way or a bad one.
Heather Greenwood Davis stayed in Treehouse One with her husband and published her account in Afar on 18 September 2026. She writes of mornings spent "lingering in the sunlit living room, taking in panoramic forest views," birch-panelled walls, heated concrete floors and organic mattresses. Dinner was a meal kit cooked over their own fire pit; the shared building, the Hydda, served tinned fish, bread and cheese.
The detail I would underline is one she reports almost in passing: staff leave in the evening, and guests are given a number to call. That is a choice, not an omission. It suits people who want to be left alone, and it asks a little more of everyone else.
Three questions I would put to the property, not answers I can give you. How the solar system and batteries hold through a run of grey days in November and February. Who answers the after-hours number, and how far away they are. And which of the three houses suits someone who finds stairs hard: the property lists a ramp to Treehouse One, while the Afar account warns of steep stairs and uneven ground. Both can be true at once. Ask before you book.
A car, first. Your own cooking, or a chef arranged in advance, since there is no standing restaurant. No television and no landline in the rooms. Published rates start at C$665 a night for the two smaller houses and C$995 for Treehouse One, before tax, as of 19 September 2026. The houses do not take pets.
