India and Ayurveda, Read Honestly

The world's oldest continuous system of medicine, in the country that never stopped practising it. What real Ayurveda asks of you — time, discipline, and a clinical seriousness the spa version...

Ayurveda is sold around the world as a massage with warm oil. In India — and specifically in Kerala, its living heartland — it is something else entirely: a complete diagnostic and therapeutic system, thousands of years old, practised by physicians who trained for years. The difference between the two is the difference between a holiday and a course of treatment, and it is the single most important thing to understand before you go.

What real Ayurveda asks

Time. Authentic panchakarma — the core cleansing and rebalancing programme — runs three to four weeks, not a long weekend. Shorter "Ayurvedic spa" stays can be pleasant, but they are not the medicine. Discipline. Real programmes involve diet, daily routine, herbal protocols, and physician oversight; you submit to a process rather than choose from a menu. The right season. Counter-intuitively, Kerala's monsoon (roughly June–September) is the traditional Ayurvedic season — the cool, humid air is considered ideal for the treatments.

The honest caveat

Quality varies enormously, from genuine physician-led centres to resorts using the word as decoration — and telling them apart from the outside is nearly impossible, which is exactly where guidance earns its place. Real Ayurveda is also demanding, not indulgent: if you want to be pampered, this isn't it. And India is intense in every register; the contrast with a quiet centre is part of the experience but should be chosen knowingly.

Who it's for

Someone with a genuine health goal and the time and discipline for a real programme, who wants a system rather than a spa. Not for someone seeking a gentle, indulgent week — for that, almost any other guide here serves better.

India is the destination where the gap between the real thing and the imitation is widest — and where I'm most useful, because I'll point you to the genuine and away from the costume. Begin a Discovery conversation.

Where to go from here

Keep reading. If this stayed with you, the next essay follows the same thread.

A letter, now and then. I write slowly, and only when there's something worth your time.

Ask the guide. Which valley, what the method actually is, how fees work — answered in plain language, trained on how I think. Ask the guide →

Begin a conversation. If how you spend the next decades — and where you go to genuinely return — is on your mind, that's what the practice is for. Twenty minutes, no charge. Begin a Discovery Conversation →
